Sweetman's corner drug store was located at La Salle St. and Goold St.
If your trip home took you down La Salle St. and you couldn't wait until you
got to Frank's, this was the place to stop.  It is currently a music store.

The Corner Stores

These were a memorable part of those trips home from school.  Do you remember when a
penny actually bought something?  Like those colored sugar dots on strips of white paper.
How many pounds of paper did we consume while trying to eat those?  Below are eight
of the corner stores that were located around St. John's.

Spoehr's corner store was located at Green St. and Goold St, just one
block north of school.  A favorite stop for those heading home along
Green St.  This building is currently vacant.

Frank's corner store located at La Salle St. and Romayne Av. was just across
from Roosevelt School.  For that reason, it was probably one of the more popular
stops, not only going home from school but also on the weekends when playing
on the Roosevelt School grounds.  Frank's was also noted for having one of the
best candy counters.  This building has since been converted into efficiency
apartments and also has a small business unit on the east end.

Those heading southwest on their way home from school had D'Acquisto's
corner store located at English St. and La Salle St.  This was definitely the
easiest store to sneak off to during those the short recess breaks.  It has
  now been converted into apartments.

Heading north again and a bit further down on Green St. was
Sam's corner store located at the intersection with Augusta St.
This building is now being used as an antique shop.

Two more choices awaited those heading north down Geneva St. at the
intersection with Romayne Av.  Nevin's corner store (left) was located directly
across form Myron's corner drug store (right).  Nevin's is now a small business
selling party supplies and Myron's is currently a beauty salon.

Those who traveled north along Erie St. had Dazzie's corner store
at the intersection with Wolff St.  This is now being used as an
  insurance agency.
